In its latest Annual Report: The State of the Worldโs Human Rights โ April 2025, Amnesty International has issued a stark warning about a worldwide decline in the protection and respect for human rights. The report, which covers developments in over 150 countries, highlights the growing use of legal, security, and propaganda tools by governments to suppress fundamental freedoms and silence civil society.
Amnesty notes with alarm the global rise of authoritarian and extremist regimes, particularly in parts of the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and even within traditionally democratic regions of Europe. These trends reflect an erosion of international human rights norms and a disregard for the dignity and rights of millions of individuals across the globe.
The report documents widespread patterns of violations including increasing attacks on journalists, human rights defenders, ethnic and religious minorities, women, refugees, and marginalized communities. It points to the banning of peaceful protests, arbitrary detentions, shrinking civic space, and the excessive use of force by state actors as recurring features in many states.

In a separate statement, Amnesty also emphasized the negative impact of populist and ultranationalist rhetoric on the global human rights landscape. The organization warns that the normalization of repression and global indifference to human suffering threatens not only the rule of law, but also international peace and stability.
