June 1st- Global Day of Parents: Honoring Parents, Safeguarding the Future

1/5

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 1st as the Global Day of Parents, recognizing the selfless commitment of parents and their foundational role in nurturing families and building society. This observance continues a legacy of global initiatives supporting family life, including the 1994 International Year of the Familyand the International Day of Families (May 15).

Growing Challenges for Parents Worldwide

Today, parents face unprecedented challenges. The global population of aging parents is rising, many of whom lack adequate emotional, medical, and social support. Meanwhile, countless parents are unable to meet their children’s basic needs—clean drinking water, nutritious food, healthcare, and education—due to conflict, displacement, poverty, or environmental disasters.

Armed conflicts, climate-driven droughts, deforestation, and forced migration have pushed millions of families to the edge. In some distressing cases, man-made famines and blockades—used as instruments of war—have intentionally deprived civilians of access to food and water, violating the core principles of international humanitarian law.

A Global Responsibility

The emotional toll on parents unable to protect their children is immense. This crisis demands a coordinated international response. The United Nations and its specialized agencies must be empowered and well-resourced to address these pressing human needs.

National governments and civil society organizations should also promote family-friendly policies such as parental leave, accessible childcare, mental health support, and protections for single caregivers and mothers in vulnerable conditions.

Toward a More Just Future

Parenthood is sacred. It reflects both responsibility and hope. On this Global Day of Parents, let us recommit to building a world where no parent has to choose between survival and dignity, and no child is left behind due to circumstances beyond their control. Let us ensure that parental roles are honored, protected, and supported in every society.

Supporting parents is not charity – it is justice.
