On August 8, 2026, Roya Institute for Global Justice conducted a pilot online English language learning session for migrant learners, providing participants with an accessible, welcoming, and supportive environment to strengthen their practical English communication skills.
The session was organized by Roya Institute and led by Dr. Leyla Tajer, a member of Roya Institute’s Advisory Board. Dr. Tajer conducted the session as part of her professional teacher preparation and clinical experience through the Rutgers University–New Brunswick Graduate School of Education Alternate Route Program. The experience provided an opportunity to connect her teacher preparation with meaningful educational service to migrant learners.
Designed for beginning English learners, the session emphasized practical communication and active participation. Instruction incorporated visual materials, modeling, repetition, guided practice, pronunciation exercises, and frequent checks for understanding. Participants were encouraged to use English confidently and to communicate without fear of making mistakes.
The small-group online setting allowed for direct interaction with the instructor and individual attention when learners needed additional support. Participants engaged actively throughout the session, demonstrating growing confidence in using English for everyday communication.
This pilot initiative reflects Roya Institute’s broader commitment to education, capacity building, and expanding opportunities for migrant and underserved communities. Language skills can play an important role in helping newcomers communicate more confidently, participate in their communities, pursue educational and employment opportunities, and navigate everyday life in a new environment.
Based on the experience of this pilot session, Roya Institute looks forward to exploring further educational opportunities that can strengthen language skills, confidence, community participation, and lifelong learning among migrant learners.
